Some are national and some are locally based in Dallas, Texas. The common thread is that these are all philanthropic, volunteer-oriented organizations that are untapped by many nonprofit organizations.
Along with the generational shift we’re all talking about there is also a racial/ethnic shift happening. According to U.S. Census data the tipping point will be the mid-2040’s, a short 15 years away. This isn’t political rhetoric; it’s based on a declining birth rate for the non-Hispanic white population in the U.S. and growth among other population groups.
Philanthropy is a value shared across cultures; it just may be called something different.
- Black households in the U.S. give 25% more of their income than white households.
- Latinos give less to organizational charities but more informally, such as funding a family member’s education or sending money to family in another country.
- According to Pew Research, 64% of Asian American adults reported giving to a charity in 2023-24.
These statistics are not apples to apples, but they still illustrate the generosity of groups of people in the U.S. that the big surveys and studies may miss or undercount.
Now, more than ever, is the time to expand your donor base. As a nonprofit leader is who working on your strategic plan and fundraising forecast, it makes sense to learn about the many communities that make up your city or town. You, your board, staff, and volunteers can make inroads into these communities by being present at their community events, places of worship, chambers of commerce, and other gathering places. There is opportunity to raise money, recruit volunteers, and identify staff for now and the future that is a short fifteen years ahead.
